Will potatoes make you fat?

Post by UpperDiet »

Potatoes are seen as unhealthy and fattening by many people. The reason for this is probably the low-carbohydrate diets like Atkins . In these diets potatoes and bread are out of the question. For many people, bread, potatoes and pasta are indispensable in everyday life. Fortunately, we have good news for these people. Just as bread, potatoes are not fattening. The method of preparing potatoes however, can make them very unhealthy. Potatoes fit perfect in a diet.

Nutritive value
Potatoes are not unhealthy when we look at their nutritive value. 100 grams of potatoes contain 85 calories, 2 grams of protein, 17.6 grams of carbohydrates and 2.6 grams of fiber. A serving of cooked potatoes contains two times less calories as a serving of pasta or rice. This makes potatoes a good choice for a calorie restrictive diet. In addition, potatoes contain, in contrast to rice and pasta, many vitamins and fiber. Fibers provide a good bowel movement. Furthermore potatoes contain vitamins B, C and the mineral potassium.

Everyone understands that chips and fries are not very healthy. That is because the potatoes absorb much oil during the preparation. This increases the number of calories and amount of fat. Chips already contains 6 to 7 times more calories than regular potatoes. The potatoes themselves are not the culprit, but the amount of fat they suck at cooking is. It is therefore advisable to not fry potatoes to eat. Baking with little oil is better, after all you need fats. Also, healthy oven fries to be found in the supermarket is a good alternative to the fried version. Here you have to look good on the package. Often you can buy fresh oven fries which are healthier than the frozen variant already baked in the factory. Always keep an eye on the amount of sauce, mayonnaise and peanut sauce are also fattening. Ketchup is a better choice with few calories.

For example, the preparation method has a major impact and does make Flemish fries healthier than french fries. The larger the potato, the less fat is sucked up during baking. French fries simply take more fat which makes them more unhealthy.

If you still want to eat fries, opt for fresh potatoes. Frozen fries are already baked in the factory. Then you bake it again at home, so the potatoes take more fat. With fresh potatoes they can only absorb fat once because you only bake them once.
